We took Amtrak from Maryland to Chicago to attend the first public showing on April 30th of Harry Potter the Exhibition. We stayed for four days in Chicago and attended the Chicago History Museum. There we saw an original copy of the Gettysburg Address and great exhibits about fashion and the blues.
We went to The Lincoln Park Zoo, This world class facility is ALWAYS free!. The primates and the big cats were definitely highlights. The Lincoln Park Conservancy is outstanding. The floral displays are still talked about.
We also attended the Field Museum of Natural History. You can become small and walk through layers of giant soil, see ancient Egyptian artifacts and mummies, real pirates, and complete T-Rex (her name is Sue).
Finally...the reason for our trip! The first public showing of Harry Potter the Exhibition! The only thing I will say about this, even for a parent that could do without the boy wizard sometimes is WOW!!!!!!!! This exhibit is worth the trip! We also took the tour of the German U boat submarine. And we visited several other points of interest within the museum.
After MSI we went to American Girl for tea and then back to Union Station to go home. We ate our meals on the train in the dining car and the food and service were excellent. We also toured Union Station in Washington DC on a self guided walking tour.
I would highly recommend Chicago for any homeschooling family for a field trip. We also visited the Rock and Roll Mc Donalds, The Rainforest Cafe', and a Spanish Tappas restaurant . We will surely be returning to the windy city!
